Description

SS will practice Grammar and listening within context.

Materials

Abc New English File SB pp 40&41, pictures, handouts.

Main Aims

  • By the end of the lesson students will have practised the meaning, pronunciation and form of can/can't within a listening context.

Subsidiary Aims

  • By the end of the lesson students will have practised listening for gist and specific information in the context of a pop star advertisement.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-8 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will show SS pictures Michael Jackson and another one for him playing the guitar and in an advertisement. Then, I will show pictures of three people and explain that these people want to be on the TV programme. I will ask SS to work in pairs to discuss " Who do you think has star quality?" I will show them some pictures to introduce the new- vocabulary to unlock the advertisement and be ready for listening.

Exposure (10-12 minutes) • To provide a model of the task and highlight useful words and phrases

SS are going to listen to sentences 1-3 about the guitar, 4 and 5 about dancing, 6-8 about singing. SS will check their answers in pairs. I will ask SS Who do you think is the winner? Why? and encourage SS to talk about the three candidates using can and can't. Then I will play the tape for SS to hear who is the winner. After that I will focus on the sentences on Ex.d and get SS to complete them and check their answers.

Language Analysis (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the task language

I will focus on the grammar point Ex.d and write some sentences on the board to elicit the rule from SS and explain the meaning of can: know how to. After that, I will write 3 different sentences and SS highlight the correct one which is the correct form of can within a sentence. I will also explain that the negative form of can't is a contraction of cannot. In addition, I will ask SS to work in pairs to ask and answer with sing, dance, and play the guitar. After that SS will listen and repeat to focus on sentence stress. If time, SS will practise the dialogue in pairs. SS work in pairs to read the dialogue again and complete the rules.

Language Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with practice of the task language

SS will work individually to write sentences with can/can't for each picture. Then SS compare their answers with their partners. I will get feedback and accept all possible answers. After that, SS will move around the room to discuss the things they can/can't do.
