Procedure (63-80 minutes)
Start the lesson by putting up Sporadic Snippets name chosen for the paper. Ask ss to explain what they think the words mean and why it was chosen. Show them the layout of the paper so far. Now we mock it up as the stories come in over the next few sessions. During this time we will help with correcting or editing making suggestions on possible changes for them to apply. Class meeting with editor-in-chief and reporters. Ss explain what is left for their articles and discuss process of mocking up on the format selected. Ss finished with their articles to help remaining group articles to be completed.
A list of conjunctions, adverbs & prepositions displayed for reference. Displayed success criteria (see resources on day 1) Ss already have all this material but it has also been posted on the board for them How have they applied the success criteria? What needs to be improved/finished? Ask ss to make a plan for this writing session.
Ss work to complete, reread, evaluate and edit their writing. Encourage referral to success criteria and any tips created in whole-class teaching. Encourage use of writing partners to support evaluation and looking for ways to improve writing. Plenary: See Whole class Teaching for Mini Plenary part-way through the session. Ask ss to read their finished reports to themselves. How successful are they? Which success criteria did they apply? Which were harder?
Feedback and correction throughout the lesson and help with mocking up and editing. Wrap-up by showing ss the newspaper on the whiteboard so far. What are their opinions? Remind them not to forget the by lines with all their names on there.
