Write a poem
B1 level

Materials

Abc Four-sided dominoes
Abc 4 rhymes handout

Main Aims

  • By the end of the lesson Ss will be able to write a short 4-line poem (product writing)

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide Ss with an opportunity to practice pronunciation of difficult sounds in the context of rhymes

Procedure

Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To engage Ss and set lesson context

T is to introduce the game of Board Rush to Ss. T draws 4 columns with /æ/ /i/ /ai/ /əʊ/. T is to ask Ss, if they know any of the symbols. If they do, T is to ask them to give an example. If they don’t, T is to give them an example of each sound. T is to drill the pronunciation after. If there are a lot of Ss, T is to divide the class into 2 groups. If not(3 Ss), Ss can play individually. T is to read words one at a time and Ss are to decide, which column to write this word in. The fastest correct answer remains on the board, slower and incorrect ones are wiped away. Each S had a different color marker.

Useful language (7-9 minutes) • To expose Ss to the concept of “a rhyme”

T is to introduce rules of the game “Four-sided dominos” to Ss. In groups of 3 or pairs Ss are to play the game and try to find words that rhyme

Exposure (3-5 minutes) • To give Ss an example of an end product

T is to give Ss a handout containing a poem. T is to read and drill the pronunciation to increase Ss’ awareness of rhymes. After that Ss are to underline rhyming words in the poem(PW/GW depending on the numbers)

Productive task (10-15 minutes) • To give Ss an opportunity to create a final product (poem)

T is to give Ss 4 rhyming words each to prompt them to write their own poems.

Feedback (7-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on Ss' production and use of language

T is to ask Ss to pass their poems to the person on their left. After Ss read the poems, T is to give positive feedback and encourage the discussion
