Procedure (45 minutes)
Play a memory game. "I packed my suitcase with..."
T to create two columns on the WB. Write 'Packed' in the first and 'pack' in the second. T to provide more regular verbs for the second column (base form), and Ss to supply the correct form of the verb for the first column (past tense). T to provide some common irregular verbs. Regular and irregular verbs distinguished from each other. Rule clarified for regular verbs.
Students to complete gap fill exercise for past tense of regular verbs. Pronunciation rules for 'ed' clarified if necessary during feedback.
Label the two columns to introduce necessary meta-language Introduce forms for negative and interrogative statements. If there is time, address the difference between the question "Did you...?" and "What did you do?"
Past tense game. Divide students into A and B. Each student gets a sheet with base verbs written on it. The A sheets and B sheets are slightly different - only some of the verbs are the same. Each student takes it in turns to ask "Did you [go to the cinema]? Their partner replies "Yes I went to the cinema" or "No I didn't go to the cinema" depending on whether the activity is also on their sheet. How many activities are the same?
Ss to write a postcard from an imaginary holiday Compare postcards with a partner. "Can you turn some of the sentences into negatives or questions?"
