Description

In this lesson, students will practice speaking by learning and practicing vocabulary in the context of directions.

Main Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of directions

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of prepositions of places & other necessary vocabulary in the context of directions

Procedure

Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ss will going to see a photo from presentation. Ask what is happening in the photo.elicit the word direction as the context of the lesson. 1m Ss will talk in pairs and discuss what do they think that people say when someone asks about directions. 1m Monitor Elicit phrases: Excuse me and where is....? Thank you (thanks a lot), you're welcome (no problem)

Exposure (8-9 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

Ss will do EX2 from handout1 in pairs. 2m Ss will compare their answer with another pair as group and discuss their answers. 2m Give one answer key to each group so they can check all together and discuss. 1m Monitor and give FB If there were a few problem do CCQs on the problamatic vocabulary. If ss have problems on most of the vocabulary, elicit them from presentation. If ss have problems with right and left, play a game with their hands as a class. As you say they raise their hand, if not go to the next activity. 3m Drill the word "opposite" and "near" Ss will practice in a group to ask where the cafe is in each picture

Useful Language (8-9 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Give the map to SS and Elicit the words: station, restaurant, theatre, musuem, supermarket, cafe, hotel, cinema, bank, park on the map from presentation. 1m Ss will answer second part of EX5 which in in p2 of handout1 (ask ss to fold the paper so they won't confuse with the next activity). 1m Ask ss to give the answer and check while putting the correct answers on the board. 1m Ask ss to underline these phrases: go along, over there, turn, near here Ss will discuss in pairs why these phrases being used. Ss will do EX6 from Handout2 in pairs. 2m Ss will compare their answer with another pair as group and discuss their answers. 2m Give one answer key to each group so they can check all together and discuss. 1m Monitor and give FB (Elicit if necessary), CCQ, Drill the following from presentation: go along , turn, over there, near here Highlight each sentence as asking and giving direction in the activity

Controlled Practice 1 (8-9 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Ss will do the EX8 from handout2 alone. 2m Ss will peer check. 1m Ss will check the answer key from the board. 1m Ss will practice using the sentences in their group. 4m Monitor and FB, error correction if necessary

Controlled Practice 2 (5-7 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Ss will play a game as a group. Each member of the group should rush to the teacher and get a piece of paper which has a direction from Game1. They will use the map form presentation to tell where is the place mentioned in direction. If they are not sure they can ask their group members. They tell me the address and if it is correct the next member will get a new sentence. The first group finishing the 9 directions will win. Give FB at the end of the game

Productive Task(s) (7-8 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Ss will work in their group and have conversation with their group members. Each student will ask about two places given to them and they will use map on the presentation (previous game) to answer in full conversational sentences. Monitor and give delayed FB
