Description

In this lesson SS learn about the Second Conditional through situational presentation on a story made up. The lesson starts with the presentation of the story verbally and by using pictures where SS can relate to during the following stages. The meaning, the form and the pronunciation will be elicited during this stage. Next, SS will have some controlled practice by using some matching exercises. After that, they will have some grouping activities where they discuss their opinions on the story. Next, they would have a freer activity where they can give their opinions by using second conditionals. Finally, they will have a free mingling activity where they would give their opinions by using `If I were you`.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of Second Conditionals in the context of a story on a terrible crime by using a situational presentation.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a discussion in the context of giving advices by using `If I were you`.

Procedure

Presentation (4-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

- T enters the class looking sad. - T starts to introduce the story about his friends. - T sticks up pictures on the board to elicit the story - T asks and writes down the name of the characters after each exercise.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide meaning, form and pronunciation for the target language through a text or situation

- T elicits the story by asking some CCQ questions. - T waits during the story before the waking up for SS reactions about their ideas. - T wants them to make a sentence by giving the first half `If she went to the bridge, she`d have a problem` `If her husband found out the reality, he would feel very bad` - T elicits the form, the meaning and the contraction "I`d" - T concept checks and drills and writes if necessary.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning of the target language

-T hands out a matching practice with affirmative forms. - SS try to do it individually and then pair check. - SS will see the answers when they unfold the paper. - T provides immediate feedback.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for a freeer practice

-SS make groups and discuss their idea on who is the most responsible. -When they decide they were regrouped with the SS that have the same opinion. -T tells them they need to talk why they choose this person and use the term "If I were him/her, I`d go to my house earlier." - After some discussion SS express their opinions and say why they think that and what would they do if they were that person. - T takes notes and elicit the problematic grammar.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

- T hands out some prompts to the groups each member has a problem. - SS discuss their problem with the other SS one by one. - The role of the other SS is to respond by using "If I were you, I would go and talk with her about my problem" - When SS are all finished T picks some ss to ask their problems and what is the other persons advice.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language
