To provide detailed reading practice using texts about saving lives and minor illnesses in the context of first aid
Subsidiary Aims

To provide vocabulary and speaking practice
Procedure (38-48 minutes)
Students look at a picture of a man holding his throat and discuss in pairs what may be happening in the picture.
Students look at the text and guess/deduce the meaning of the highlighted words in pairs.
Students answer a multiple choice quiz about first aid and check answers with a partner
Students join two two separate groups on either side of the classroom. On each side students read half of the answer key to the quiz quietly and individually for a few minutes. When they have finished reading, students pair with one partner from the other side of the class. Pairs read their "half answer keys " to each other and in so doing check the answers to the quiz in 5 minutes.
Students read a list of illnesses and symptoms. Students answer eliciting questions to deduce the meaning of lexis. Students drill the pronunciation of lexis. Students match illnesses with corresponding symptoms. Students listen and check
If there is time, Students read discussion questions for a few minutes. Students answer discussion questions in pairs
