To provide clarification on using functional language(softening opinions and avoiding generalisations),to review and practise the target vocabulary
Subsidiary Aims
-
To learn new vocabulary connected to football and heip them avoid generalisations.(hopefully).Probably give them some food for thoughts.
Procedure (47-57 minutes)
I will have a football with me.Ask them:What am I?Possible answer :A footballer Show them a scarf or a T-shirt.Ask them again and tell them that I am a fan/I support a football team and then ask questions from exercise 1 Students's book p.36.Explain the words : get into fights and earn.
Have them look at the picture at the bottom of the page.Ask:What are the men doing?Ss answer Are the girls happy?Ss answer.Can the girls say 'All men like football"? -Yes Can the men say?Are all women talking a lot?-Yes. Is it ok to say things like that? So gradually introduce them to functional language of these topic.With the help of ex.3a Student's book ss are exposed to the phrases for the first time.
Do ex.3a from Student's book and see where we place the different phrases.Write them on board.e.g Generally speaking is at the beginning of a sentence. Do ex. 3 b. With my hand I am going to help them how they stress correcty.
Stick cards on boards which they have to match with their softer equivalents. Students stand up and match them.
Do exercise 3 from workbook p.24. Divide the class into 2 teams.Give them 4 minutes .One team softens the generalisations about men and the other about women . Ss answer.
Prepare cards with statements like:Men watch too much sport.etc. Ss have to read the statement on their own and say it again in a nicer way .Divide the class in pairs. Then they talk in pairs if they agree or disagree with the statement.Each pair chooses one statement.
