Phrasal verbs lesson

Description

In this lesson, students learn about phrasal verbs through guided discovery based on an extract from a listening activity about health and fitness. The lesson starts with a discussion about exercising and keeping fit. This is followed by a lisitening task where they listen to sentences and complete them with phrasal verbs. Finally there is some controlled practised through matching words with their meanings and free practise via final role-play activity.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher introduces students to the topic of healthy lifestyle and fitness. On a powerpoint presentation, teacher shows sentences about different people's lifestyles from a previous listening exercise and ask students if these people are trying to be healthy or not. Teacher asks students reasons for their answers.

Exposure (6-8 minutes) • To provide a model of the task and highlight useful words and phrases

Teacher draws students attention to one of the sentences of a previous activity with a phrasal verb. Teacher explains what a phrasal verb is. Students work in pairs to find more phrasal verbs in the example sentences. Teacher asks if students could give more examples of phrasal verbs. Students are given sentence cards and phrasal verb definitions. Students work in pair and try to find phrasal verbs and then match them with their definitions. Teacher shows the answers on a board so that students can check their answers.

Task (5-7 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Teacher asks students to write a question with given phrasal verbs. Students write the questions. Students work in groups to answer these questions.

Planning (2-4 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to plan students' reports

Students looks through the questions and try to complete them with the phrasal words ( words are not provided). Then students listen to the recording and complete the questions individually and then check their answers in pairs. Teacher elicits the asnwers from the students.

Report (8-10 minutes) • To allow students to report on how they did the task and how it went

Students work with a partner. They ask and answer the questions to find out more information.

Language Analysis (3-4 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the task language

Teacher points out some good language examples from the discussion and gives feedback on some common errors. If possible, teacher elicits the correction from the class.
