Main Aims

To learn using the grammar form USED TO in affirmative,interrogative and negative,to practise it through different types of exercises ,pronounce it correctly and make them able to use the form in their everyday life.
Subsidiary Aims

To revise past tenses in brief,(If needed),to boost listening skills through different songs
Procedure (28-37 minutes)
Stick pictures with celebrities on board(one of Jennifer Aniston and the other of George Clooney )Tell them to compare how they are now and how they were a few years ago.Logically they will use Simple Past .Tell them that they can use USED TO instead.Show them a picture of myself.Ask them .Where did I use to be?(England)Am I there now? No.Let's see how we use USED TO
Make a substitution table on board . Use subjects (I,you etc)+used to +infinitive (Affirmative) Did +subjects+use to +infinitive? (Question) Subjects+didn't use to +infinitive (Negative) The teacher needs to point out how important the omossion of -d is in the negative and interrogative form.It is time to draw attention on phonology.(analysed in the next stages) Drilling . Plenty of examples to understand that it is used to for repeated actions in the past. CCQs 1.Mary used to have a dog named Rex.(Does Mary have a dog now?-No) 2.They used to go out a lot when they were younger.(Do they go out a lot now?-Not any more. 3.My best friend used to live in the Usa .(Does he live in the USA now?-No.)
Students have to do exercises with used to in the photocopies given.As soon as they finish ,they check their answers with the student sitting next to them.
Hand out photocopies with a table divided into 2 columns.On their own they write what they used to do when they were younger and what they do now.Ideas are given on board.(food,clothes,hair,habits(good /bad).After finishing anyone chosen at random ask question in class.e.g Did you use to smoke?
Give them a photocopy from different songs .All songs are with the form used to.Before playing the song,students have to complete the sentences in the most logical way.Do not provide them with the answer yet.Listen to the song and check if you are right. Talk about the righ answers after the listening
