Procedure (45-55 minutes)
Ex 1 - Show the picture & title on p.10 & elicit a few guesses about the story. Ss in pairs/small groups discuss the 2 questions in ex.1. Take some general feedback (FB), but do not confirm/reject ideas/suggestions at this stage.
Ex 2 - Have Ss read through the questions in ex.2 (deal with any unknown vocab). Ss listen to Saroo’s story then discuss the questions in pairs & pool their information. If needed (after peer-checking) play the recording again & allow them to check/complete their answers (though don’t let this stage go on too long as it isn’t your main aim). Take whole-class feedback (w/c FB).
Give Ss a less challenging fast reading before they read for details, and you could have Ss in pairs/small groups think of a couple of questions they would like answered before they read. Monitor and help if needed. Ss havd to read quickly to see if their questions are answered. Need to set a time limit (2 mins) and need to remind Ss they don’t need to read every word. Ss read then peer-check. Have to take some general w/c FB to see if their questions were answered
Ex 3 - Make sure Ss read & understand the true/false (T/F) statements before reading again to make sure they know what they are reading for. Give them time to read the full story & complete the task. Put them in pairs or groups to compare their answers before sharing them with the whole class. In w/c FB, encourage Ss to quote from the text to support their answers
‘What do you think?’ - Put the Ss in groups of 3 or 4. Encourage Ss to explain their ideas and not simply provide short/text-based answers. Give them time to discuss their answers. If time, groups can be put together to compare answers or a whole-class discussion can follow in w/c FB.
