Speaking Practise Through Personal Networks
Pre-Intermediate level
Description
Materials
Main Aims
-
To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of family, acquaintances, work/school contacts.
Subsidiary Aims
-
To provide review of simple present tense by giving descriptions on people they know.
Procedure (45-55 minutes)
When the class begins, before saying anything I will start drawing a chart on the board, which, I believe, is going to attract attention. Then I will ask them what it could be. I expect to have short conversations.
The sts will be given an example list of professions, family members, and acquaintances, so they will have enough vocabulary to work on the tasks. This will keep them alerted and not frustrated by the exercises. But before I give them the exercises, we will do some brainstorming on the vocabulary.
To create more interest in the topic and set clearer instructions, I will erase the chart on the board. Then I will hand in the same chart on an empty piece of paper and I will ask the sts do the same.
Depending on the number of the sts, they will work in pairs or groups. There are three exercises to complete and they will have been given in advance. We are going to talk about their contacts, acquaintances, and families through mostly practising simple present tense. Also, the sts will again work in pairs and create short conversations about the same topics.
I would like to take notes while the sts are talking and I want to jot down their mistakes. Then we will talk about those and correct them. First, I will ask the students to work on them, but if no one can do them, I will explain all.
