Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about the people watchers.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation

Procedure

Stage 1 (Lead-in) (3-5 minutes) • To introduce the lesson through pictures related to the text.

The lesson starts with the teacher putting some paste-ups on the whiteboard. The students are expected to guess what the pictures are all about. The teacher will elicit the word "advertisement" and ask the students to share their opinions whether the they are creative or not. The goal in this stage is to introduce the learners to the text by using some certain words such as convincing/persuasive, creative or advertisement. Afterwards, the teacher will ask the students to discuss about their own creative ways with a partner when to sell something or help a product to be known better. The learners will be asked to discuss through the following questions found in the question sheet. Question sheets will be placed under chairs. 1.How would you convince someone to do a certain thing? 2.If you are to market a car, how would you do it? What sort of creative ways would you use in the process? 3.What do you think which of the images on the whiteboard is the most creative one? Why? The teacher monitors and pick up some interesting points and ask the learners to share some of their ideas with the whole class.

Stage 2 (Vocabulary) (3-5 minutes) • To pre-teach the vocabulary

The teacher will pre-teach the words persuade, experiment and pretend. The teacher will elicit the vocabulary from the students, ask CQs, model/drill and write on the board in order to show the stress and the part of speech. (See language analysis)

Stage 3 (Discussion) (3-5 minutes) • To make the learners discuss the questions related to the topic.

The teacher will ask the students to discuss the questions from ex. 1a in pairs. The teacher will monitor and pick up some points for the questions. After Ss finish the task, the teacher will ask why they think so. Then, the learners will be asked to read the article and check their ideas. (exercise 1B) After they finish reading, the teach may ask if their ideas are matched with the text.

Stage 4(Questions) (5-10 minutes) • To make the learners read for comprehension and find answers for the questions.

In exercise 2A, the students will be reading for detail. They will be asked to read the text over and find the detailed answers for each question. The teacher monitors and identifies the problems that the students have. After they finish, the teacher ask Ss to compare answers with a partner. Then, the teacher will talk about the picked points and provide a delayed feedback. The feedback will be provided by eliciting the answers from the learners.

Stage 5 (Headings) (5-10 minutes) • To provide a reading for comprehension and get the learners into a group work check.

The students will use headings in 2B to make notes from the article. The teacher will monitor and pick up some important points. After they finish, they will be expected to check answers in a group. After group check, the students will share their notes with the whole class and the teacher, if needed, will provide a delayed feedback. The answer sheet will be provided afterwards. If time permits, the students will be expected to go through the exercise 2C.

Stage 6 (Follow-up) (5-10 minutes) • To give the learners plenty of chance to speak.

In this stage of the lesson, the students will be expected to practise the things they have learnt during the lesson. Based on the techniques and marketing/advertising methods listed in the article, the teacher will ask the learners to apply it into their own task given by the teacher. The teacher divides up the students into two different groups and gives the following task to each group. 1st group: The teacher asks the 1st group to create their own product, whether it makes sense or not, and try to sell it to the 2nd group. 2nd group: the teacher asks the 2nd group to think of something that they want the 1st group to do and try to persuade them. During this follow up activity, the students are expected to use the language based on the article and practise what has been learnt throughout the lesson.
