In this lesson Ss learn the past continuous tense.The lesson is based on grammar..Ss learn the meaning and the form of the past continuous tense and use it in speaking activity with their partners.They also work on pronounciation past continuous tense.

Main Aims

  • To introduce and give practice in using the past continuous tense

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide speaking practice by using the past continuous tense

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Firstly I introduce myself , "Hello , I'm Ece.Welcome to our English class.".Now , do you remember Kelly from the previous lesson ? What happened to her ? Who can tell me ?

Exposure (5-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

I will stick the text on the board and give them four questions , ask them to go and find the answers. I will try to review past simple as it will be used with the past continuous. How was she feeling ? What did Kelly do in the class ? What were the children doing ? What was the headmaster doing ? How was the weather ? WC feedback

Clarification (10-15 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

.I will quote some of the sentence from the text , write it on the board and try to make students elicit about the meaning and form of the tenses. for ex : 1-The children were laughing.Then I will ask CCQs Are they laughing now ? No. When were the children laughing ? In the past , now or in future ? In the past I wil draw a timeline and show them on it. 2-The headmaster was standing at the door. CCQs : Was he sitting? No. What was he doing ? He was standing. Is he standing now ? No. When was he standing ? In the past. I ask them to show this sentence on the timeline. 3.When I woke up in the morning , I wasn't feeling very well. CCQ When did she wake up ? In the morning. Is she sleeping now ? No. Was she feeling well ? No. Again we will show it on the timeline. While doing this activity, we will learn to formulate the sentences.I will ask them , Look at the board.How can we make a sentences in the past continuous ? I will show them "subject " on the board but ı will ask , Is it verb ? No , What is it ? ıt's subject.Ok will write down "S" Then I wil try to elicit from the students " Subject + was / were + verb+ing " , yes / no questions and Wh questions. When the headmaster opened the door , she was sleeping , I will also Project this sentence and draw timeline , show past simple & continuous together.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Ss will do the exercise 1.Firstly I will give them instructions , Now complete the sentences.Use the past simple or past continuous.I will monitor them while doing the exercises.Then I will give the answer key.Finaly I will check as WC feedback.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Exercise 2 , I will give them the picture on p.132 and tell Ss look at the picture carefully.Then tell them close the pictures.After I will give them the questions on page 127.Then Ss will answer these questions in pair as much as they can remember.I will give them answer key to check.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Exercise 3 , They will work in pairs.Ss ask and answer the questions about specific times in the past continuous.I will ask them to invent intresting answer Then we will check as WC feedback.
