Description

In this lesson, students will practice reading for gists and details through an information gap activity based on a reading text about Songkran – a kind of new year celebration. The lesson starts with a discussion about ways of celebrating the new year and followed by a jigsaw reading. Finally, there are some controlled practice through linking reasons and results building on the vocabulary and free practice where students practice speaking and writing.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist reading practice using a text about Songkran
  • To provide detailed reading practice about customs of a new year celebration in the context of Thai culture

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T writes "celebration" on the board and encourage students to brainstorm about it. Ss describe the picture of the unit and they guess what they are celebrating

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Ss discuss "Getting Ready to Read" questions in groups.

While-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

Ss read a specific part of the text to complete the jigsaw reading activity.

While-Reading #2 (20-25 minutes) • To clarify unknown words for a detailed reading.

Ss write the target words on their books and circle the unknown ones. They work as pairs to complete the target vocabulary fill in the gaps activity. T encourages them to read the sentences including these words from the text to guess the meanings and they are not allowed to use a dictionary. At the end of the activity pairs change the books to come up with same answers. WC check the answers together. T support the vocabulary acquisition when it is needed. Ss take turn to answer the second vocabulary fill in the gaps activity questions reflected on the board.

While-Reading #3 (15-20 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

Ss read the whole text and answer the reading for details and reason result questions.They check the answers as WCF

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

T groups to students and they talk about the ways of celebrating new year.
