This is a vocabulary lesson. SS will practice using new vocabulary in the context of country versus city.

Main Aims

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice using new vocabulary in the context of country and city.

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T shows a 2 pictures; one of busy Cairo and the other is a picture of the country side. T asks: where would you like to live? why?

Test #1 (8-10 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

T gives SS a sheet with pictures and slips of paper with vocabulary. to match. T demonstrates the first one (or two) with the SS. T asks SS to match the words with the pictures. SS check their answers in pairs. T provides answer key.

Teach (10-15 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

T elicits the meanings of difficult words and shows pictures to check SS' understanding. T elicits the form of the words. T drills pronunciation and shows words on PowerPoint slide.

Test #2 (8-10 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

T chests task and tells SS "you are going to use the words in the box to fill in the gaps". T demonstrates the first one (or two) with the SS. SS check their answers in pairs. T provides answer key and gives SS time to look at it, then T asks SS how they found the task and if they have any questions.

Free practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T divides SS into two groups: one group will discuss the good and the bad things about living in the country. The other group will discuss the good and the bad things about living in the city. T will provide cue cars for both groups to guide them.
