In this lesson, students will read a text about how people live longer. The lesson will start a lead-in in which students' opinions / suggestions about getting old will be asked. Then students will discuss some sentences about what affects the lifespan. Then read the text for gist specific information and detailed information respectively. At the end of the lesson,

  • To provide students with practice in speaking for fluency.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Start the lesson with a warm greeting. Connect the lesson to the previous one. Ask students what they learnt in the previous lessons. Elicit the answer "should". Tell them "I need some advice from you. I will be 32 next week and I'm sorry for that because I don't want to get older. I like being young. What should I do to stay young?" Elicit some answers from the students by nominating some of them.

Pre-Reading (6-7 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Ask students "Does your advice help me to live longer?" Elicit some answers and tell them "I have some sentences. These can be about living longer. Work in pairs. Discuss the sentences. Do you think these are true? Why? You have 3 minutes." Distribute the HO. Monitor them during the activity. Elicit the answers as a whole class. Try to elicit some of the words during the feedback to teach by asking some questions. What do we call the type of food people usually eat? diet (n) /ˈdaɪ.ət/ Is it the food you eat? (yes) Can it be a drink? (yes) Do you eat it for one time or usually? (usually) Ask students to give examples from their diet. What do you call the time a person lives? lifespan (n) /ˈlaɪf.spæn/ Is it the start of life? (no) Is it the end of life? (no) Is it the whole life? (yes) The lifespan of a person is about 70 years. That means I will live until I am 70 years old.” Explaining: “Some people die at the age of 60 and some die at the age of 80. The average lifespan is 70 years.” average (n) /ˈæv.ər.ɪʤ/ Is it a certain amount? (no) Is it an approximate amount? (yes) Is it a typical amount? (yes)

While-Reading #1 (4-5 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist reading tasks

Tell students "Let's see if you are true then. We have a text. Read the text quickly in 1 minute and match the sentences with the paragraph." Ask ICQs: - Do you read the text in a detailed way? (no) - How many minutes do you have? (1 minutes) - What do you do? (match the sentences with the paragraph) Distribute the HO (text). Ask students to check their answers with their partners. Do plenary feedback. Ask for justification for each paragraph.

While-Reading #2 (7-8 minutes) • To provide students with specific information reading tasks

Tell students "Let's learn more about the text. We have some questions with gaps. Read the text again and complete the gaps with words or numbers from the text. You have 4 minutes." Ask ICQs: - Will you complete the gaps with words or numbers? - both - How many minutes do you have? - 4 Ask students to check their answer with their partners. Do plenary feedback. Nominate some students to answer the question. Ask students to come to the board and answer the questions. Ask for justification. Make them show where they have found the answer.

While-Reading #3 (9-10 minutes) • To provide more challenging detailed reading tasks

Tell students they are going to read the text again. Give the instruction. "Read the text in a detailed way. Write True or False for the sentences. Correct the false ones. You have 5 minutes." Ask ICQs: - Are all the sentences true? - no, some are false - What are you going to do with the false ones? - correct them Distribute the HO. Ask them to check their answers with the partners. Do plenary feedback. Go through all of the answers by nominating different students for each answer. Ask for justification for each answer.

Post-Reading (9-11 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Give the instruction. "Work in pairs and discuss the questions. You have 6 minutes to talk." Distribute the HO. Monitor students during the activity. Help them if necessary. Take notes about any error. Do plenary feedback. Ask students to talk with their partners about what they have learnt today.
