Description

In this lesson, students will listen some extracts about three women for gist, specific information and detailed information.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist, specific information and detailed listening practice using a text about successful women

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide students with practice in speaking for fluency in the context of successful women.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Start the lesson with a warm greeting. Connect the lesson to the previous one. Tell students they learn about three women. Ask their names. (Chimokel, Sarah and Soula) Ask students "Did you want to learn more about them?"

Pre-Listening (6-7 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Ask students some questions about the women related to the text they read in the previous lesson to elicit some vocabulary. "What do you know about these women? What are their jobs? (Chimokel-farmer, Soula-businesswoman, Sarah-sportswoman) What does Sarah do? Does she swim? (show students what Sarah do by using body language to elicit "row") row (v) /rəʊ/ (Use body language to elicit the meaning) "They are successful. So what will these people get?" (use body language to elicit award) award (n) /əˈwɔːd/ - Do we buy an award? - no - Does someone give it to us? - yes - Is it a gift? - no - Why? - because of the success - Do I have to win something or be successful? - yes Elicit the answers by nominating some of the students. Before listening, ask students to predict what they are going to listen in the audio about the women. Give the instruction "Before listening, work in pairs and think about what we will learn about these women. For example, do you think we will learn about their hometown? List the things with your partner. You have 2 minutes." Ask ICQs to check their understanding of the instruction. - Are you going to listen or speak now? - speaking - Who will you talk about, yourself or the women in the photo? - the women After students have finished, elicit some answers from the students. Make other students listen them by asking their opinions about what their friend has just said.

While-Listening #1 (5-6 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist listening tasks

Tell students "Now, we will listen about these women and let's see what we will learn about them more." Show the activity on the board and give the instruction "We have three women and some phrases about them. These are jumbled/mixed. Put them into the correct order while listening." Ask ICQs: - Will you tick the things we hear? - no - Will you put them in order? - yes Distribute the HO. After they listen, ask them to check their answers with their partners and discuss about them in 1 minute. Do plenary feedback. Nominate some students to check the answers. Ask for justification.

While-Listening #2 (7-8 minutes) • To provide students with specific information listening tasks

Tell students that they are going to listen to the audio again. Show students the HO on the board. Give the instruction. "Listen to the audio again. We have some sentences. Some are true and some are false. Write true or false for each statement. And correct the false ones". Ask ICQs: - Are you going to listen again? - yes - Are all the sentences true? - no, some are false - What are you going to do with the false ones? - correct them Distribute the HO. Give them 1 minute to see the sentences before listening. Start the audio. Ask them to check their answers with the partners. Do plenary feedback. Go through all of the answers by nominating different students for each answer. Ask for justification for each answer. If students have problems with the questions, plat that part of the audio to make them clear.

While-Listening #3 (8-9 minutes) • To provide more challenging detailed listening tasks

Tell students that they are going to listen to the audio for the last time. Show students the HO on the board. Give the instruction. "Listen to the audio again. There are some questions. Find the answers of the questions and write them down". Distribute the HO. Give them 1 minute to see the questions before listening. Start the audio. Ask them to check their answers with the partners. Do plenary feedback. Go through all of the answers by nominating different students for each answer. Ask for justification for each answer. If students have problems with the questions, plat that part of the audio to make them clear.

Post-Listening (10-12 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Give the instruction "We have some questions about the three women. Work in pairs. Discuss the questions and the reasons. Take short notes if necessary. You have 6 minutes." Ask ICQs: - Do you work in groups or pairs? -pairs - Do you only answer the questions? - no - Do you discuss the reasons also? - yes - How many minutes do you have? - 6 minutes Distribute the HO. Monitor students during the activity. Help them if necessary. Take notes about any error. Do plenary feedback. Ask students to talk with their partners about what they have learnt today.
