Materials

Abc Cutting Edge,Third Edition

Main Aims

  • To provide practice of word families in the context of 21st century skills

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a pronunciation in the context of word families

Procedure

Warmer, fill-in (1-2 minutes) • Rapport, late comers arrive !

I will ask them to make two groups. I'll ask a member of each group (voluntarily) come to the board and sit back to the word. I will write a sentence on the board. Other members of the groups should help those two members to guess the sentence.

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Before starting to read the text, I will write the four C's (Communication, Collaboration, Critical thinking, and Creativity) on the board and will ask them to guess what are these fours C's using pictures to elicit and write them on the board. I will ask the Ss to think about how they use these skills in their job or studies and share their ideas in pairs.

Pre-Reading (1-2 minutes) • Set the context for reading

In this stage, I will ask Ss to guess what will be the text about? They should guess based on the pictures and lexis I wrote on the board.

Pre-Reading 2 (Pre-teach Lexis) (1-2 minutes) • Facilitiate better engagemnet with the text

I will tell them there is some lexis you need to know prior to starting reading the text. I will provide the context and try to elicit them, if possible.

First Reading (Gist Qs) (2-8 minutes) • Get a major theme of the text

I will divide the students into two groups. Each group has half of the text. First, they will go over it alone and then share their ideas in their group. Then, I will number the students of each group (1-5/6 depending on the number of Ss). I will ask the same number to go together and share what they read and talk with each other. I will use CCQ to see if they understood what they are going to do or not? Ex: - Are you going to read every word or to get a general idea of the text? Ss: General idea of the text T: Yes, absolutely...

Second Reading (Scanning) (3-8 minutes) • Intensive Reading, Finding word families

I will ask them to read the text alone to find the word families and check their thoughts in pairs and then I will challenge them to tell which part of the sentences helped them to get the answers. This time I will also ask CCQ to see if they understood what they are going to do. T: Are you going to read quickly or slowly and in detail? Ss: slowly and in detail T: Brilliant!

Controlled Practice 1 (3-5 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

In this stage, I will ask them to check beneath their chairs to find the practice they are going to do. I will explain the procedure thoroughly that after picking up the papers, they should not look at the back of the papers because it contains the answer (T/F). They can do it individually or in pairs. Working in pair or group is preferred because they may go back to the text due to the different idea they may have in their group regarding the practice.

Controlled Practice 2 (3-5 minutes) • Word Families

In this stage is about finding the word families (Noun & adjectives forms). I will ask them to find the answers using the reading text they’ve already covered. They will work in their pair/group to check their answers.

Controlled Practice 3 (2-5 minutes) • Pronunciation

Listen and repeat! Using audio files, then I will repeat the pronunciation and will show them the transcript of the word to see the stressed syllable and then, will ask them to repeat it. Paying attention to the stressed syllable!
