Procedure (39-47 minutes)
Ask them about unusual journeys and mention some of the phrasal verbs that came up in the previous class. Then tell them the name of the structure (phrasal verb), ask them if they've heard of it before, and tell them this will form the bulk of the lesson.
Give hand out 1 to students and have them work in pairs to match the phrasal verbs with the correct definitions. Then have them swap partners and peer check before doing WGFB.
Explain on the board with a column for separable and a column for inseparable phrasal verbs and with example sentences illustrating how separable phrasal verbs can have the object before or after the particle, whereas in inseparable phrasal verbs the object always comes after. Then give them the hand out to read through on their own.
Explain to students what the following exercise involves - putting the word "it" in the appropriate place in the sentences - and make sure they understand the task by having them do an example with you on the board. Give them the hand out and ask them to complete in pairs. Then swap partners, peer check, WGFB.
Exactly the same steps and same hand out as previous stage, but ask them to come up with other nouns in place of "it".
Explain that when speaking at a normal pace, words in the sentence join together when an initial vowel sound follows a final consonant. Write examples on the board and draw lines between words to show visually where words join in spoken English. One by one write each example on the board from the pronunciation exercise on p.19 of "Straightforward Intermediate", asking the students to repeat drills as a WG and as individuals before moving on to the next example.
Explain that the next exercise involves putting the phrasal verbs we have covered into the blanks on the hand outs they will be given, and that they should read the completed sentences aloud to their partner using word linking. Put class into pairs, give half of the pairs hand out 4a and the other half 4b. Monitor and correct incorrect language immediately. Peer check. WGFB.
Praise students for hard work and pass on to Damla.
