Subsidiary Aims

-
To provide students with the practice of decision making through real-life tasks
Procedure (39-44 minutes)
I will show three questions on the board as follows and want them to discuss for 2 minutes: 1. Do you do sports? If yes, do you earn money by doing sports? 2. Do students in your country get money from their schools as they do sports? Do you think it is a good thing? Explain why. Then I will conduct by eliciting some ideas within a plenary feedback.
I will tell them to match the words and their definitions in Exercise 1 and set 1 minute. Then I will ask them to compare their answers with their partners before whole class feedback. In the second exercise, I will ask them the questions in the book by showing the photos on the board and elicit the ideas.
I will tell them they will watch a video and answer the questions in Exercise 3. Before they watch I will ask them to go over the questions. After they watch, I will get them do peer-check then I will conduct a whole class feedback.
I will tell students they will watch the video again and match the two halves of the sentences in exercise 4. I will give them time to check the sentences and play the video. After they watch, I will ask them to compare their answers in pairs and I will go through the answers in a plenary feedback session. PS: They sometimes have difficulty doing the detailed tasks of these video activities in the book. If they get confused and unable to carry out the task, I will replay the video with the subtitles on.
I will get them into groups of 4. Then I will tell them they are a group of business people and want to give scholarship to some students at university. I will ask them to prepare an application form for their scholarship and write some questions about what qualifications or situations students must have in order to win theirs. I will set 7 minutes for them to prepare their form. While they are doing this I will be monitoring and checking if everything is going well. After they finish, I will ask them to go to another group and interview them with the questions in the form, then they will choose a person from that group to win the scholarship. After each group decides on who should win, they explain the other groups why they have chosen that person by commenting on his/her answers. I will do some error correction and reformulation on the board if necessary.
