Procedure (39-47 minutes)
T illustrates 5 pictures of famous stadiums in the world and asks students if they can name them/or if they know where they are. T then clarifies the location/name of these stadiums. T asks Ss the following questions: -How often do you go to stadiums? -Do you enjoy sports events? -What's more important: a- to enjoy a sporting event or b- to enjoy the atmosphere of nice/comfortable/enormous/stylish design of a stadium? T writes 'Design or sport?' on the board and asks Ss to comment which one is more important.
T divides the class so that each S gets a paragraph to skim and sets time of 1-2 minutes and asks them to get the general idea of the paragraph and comment on it writing only one sentence. Then Ss share their sentences and try to get the overall idea of the text.
T gives Ss a matching exercise with new vocabulary from the text. Ss work in pairs to find a matching definition. T then asks Ss to scan the text to find out the new words from the text and asks them to read so that they can see how the words are used/understand the context
T gives them the headings to match with the paragraphs and sets time limit of 6 minutes. Ss work individually and T debriefs the exercise with the whole class.
T asks Ss the following questions: -So what does the author say about art and construction of big sports stadiums? -Are stadiums in Istanbul more practical than a masterpiece?
T asks Ss the following questions: - How to skim well? - Is it difficult to keep up with the time limit? - What is the most challenging in reading exercises? - How can we overcome these problems?
