Subsidiary Aims
-
To provide accuracy and fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of seasons, weather and months of the year.
Procedure (35-45 minutes)
I'll start by telling them a story. "My last holiday was awful. I was with my mother and the weather was stormy. We didn't go outside and visit the city. I didn't enjoy." and then ask students "How was the weather on your last holiday? Did you enjoy? Why?"
First I will ask them "How many months are there in a year?" In case they don't understand, I'll give them an example "There are 7 days in a week." As soon as I get the answer from students, I will show them a video and tell them to remember the order and the names. ICQ's Will you write anything? (no) Will you watch and remember? (yes) After they watch it, I'll pair them and give them the worksheet in which they need to unscramble the names of the months. after that, I'll ask them "Can you order them. for example which is month 1" ( we don't say 1st, 2nd etc because ordinal numbers would be another topic.) They will tack them on the right side of the board. I'll drill every month's name chorally and individually.
I'll use a picture of 4 seasons here. I'll tack it on the board and ask them "Do you know what are these?" They will probably tell me the names of them because they already know winter and summer from the previous lessons. If they don't know spring and autumn/fall I can elicit them with the hangman game which would get their attention more. Meanwhile, I'll explain to them that autumn and fall is the same thing. Americans usually say fall instead of autumn even though British people call this season autumn. Then ask them" what do we call four of them? (seasons)" Later, I'll show them flashcards about weather and ask them one by one for each weather condition. (it is sunny/hot/cold/rainy/cloudy/windy/snowy/stormy/foggy) drill them all, first chorally and individually.
The students will be asked, "which months are in summer? How is the weather in summer? which months are in winter? How is the weather in winter? which months are in autumn? How is the weather in autumn? which months are in spring? How is the weather in spring?" after they answer, they should come on the board and tack their answers next to the season.
students will work in pair again and talk about these "What is your favourite season? Which month do you want to go on holiday? Why?"
