Description

Ss learn and practise the superlative forms in the context of reading about a bus journey which goes halfway round the world. Ss then plan their own journey and learn how to check and correct mistakes in their written work.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ask: How do you prefer to travel when you go on holiday? Why? Ss discuss the question in pairs. In feedback, elicit Ss' answers and find out what the most popular means of transport is. Ss then look at the photos in Ex I. Ask: Which places do you recognise? What do you know about them? Elicit what Ss know. Then look at the map and photos in the text. Ask: Which places does the bus go to? Elicit details about the photos, using the Culture notes to help.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

VOCABULARY places 1 A) Give Ss 2 mins to find the things from the box in the photos. In feedback, check/ drill their answers and teach any words that are new to them. B) If you have a map of the world available, Ss can show the class where the places are. Write interesting places that might be useful for Ex 6A on the board. Culture notes Australia is often referred to as Oz, hence the name Ozbus. Australians are often called 'Ozzies'.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

READING 2A) Teach / Check backpacker. Ask What do we call a person who travels round the world and stays in cheap places /hostels? They carry their things in a backpack. Then ask Ss Are you a backpacker? Do you want to go backpacking? WhylWhy not? Ss then read the first paragraph and compare their answers. In feedback, check/ teach journey: when you travel from one place to another, e.g. car/plane /bus journey. Also teach passengers and ultimate. 3A) Ss read the article. B) Ss read the sentences and find whether they are true or false. 4A) Write the three gapped sentences on the board. Ss read and find the answers. In feedback, elicit the answers and complete the sentences.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Elicit/ Check the rules for short and longer adjectives and irregular superlatives. Underline the longest, the most beautiful, the best in the sentences. Ss then copy them. Write sentence 1 on the board, underline the three samples of the. Then ask Is the pronunciation of the the the same each time? Play sentence I on the CD once or twice as -needed. The first the is pronounced .... because it comes after a vowel, the Ozbus. The other two are pronounced ...... Ss listen again and repeat the sentence. Then play the rest of CD. 5s listen and repeat, chorally and individually.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

PRACTICE 5A) Ss make questions about article. B) SS match answers with questions. SPEAKING Group work: Ss plan a long journey to another country. They should make a list of five places to visit: the most exciting, the most beautiful, the highest, etc

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

1A) Ss read about interesting places in Bangkok and rank them from the most interesting to least interesting. 3A) Ss listen and tick the topics the guide in Cambodia talks about. 5A) Ss do the quiz about interesting places. 3A) Ss listen and tick the correct column.
