Main Aims

  • To provide gist and scan reading practice using a text about extreme living

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in the context of extreme living cities in Egypt

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

1. show students three pictures about some cities connected with types of music related to the city or continent. 2. Ask students to look at the picture and listen to the music. 3. Ask students: * Where do you think these cities are ? *Are they in Africa, Asia or South America?

Pre-Reading (3-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible- to pre teach blocking words.

1. Pre teach these words(a roof, breathe, to dehydrate (v.) ,above/ under sea level, an altitude (n.), to hit (v.),a freezer(n.)). Elicit the words using pictures for a roof, above/under sea level. Act the following words: breathe and to dehydrate, give example about Mount Everest and its altitude. 2. Pronounce the new words and put the stress. write each word on the board with the stress. clap with each stress. 3. Ask students to guess each heading ( the coldest, the highest and the hottest with its picture. Don't confirm or reject any answer. as they will read the text to confirm their ideas in the next stage.

While-Reading #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

1.Chest the article . 2. Ask students to read the article quickly in 1 minute and complete the headings to confirm their information. 3. Ask them if they need to read each word? do they read slowly or quickly? distribute the article. 4. Ask students to check in pairs . 5.Provide answer key.

While-Reading #2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging reading for specific information.

1. Chest the wh. questions in ex. 1.c. Give instructions to Ss. Ask students to read the article again and answer six questions. 3. Ask students to read in 3 minutes. Ask them to read carefully. 4. Ask them clear ICQs: how many questions do we have? - six ,are we going to read every single word? -no 5. Ss check in pairs 6. Provide the answer key.

Post-Reading (12-15 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned orally

1. Stick some pictures of two famous touristic places in Egypt ( Alexandria & Aswan). (gallery) 2. Show students some questions to answer . 3. Ask students to walk around and stand next to the place they like 4. Divide them into two teams according to their choice. 5.Ask them when they visit their place to discuss using these questions :(5 m.) what are the most interesting places they would visit in this city? why? when do they like to visit it ? who do they like to visit it with? where would they like to stay? what is the most interesting place in this city? 6. Monitor and write some of the response . 7.Write them on the board and present feedback.
