Procedure (35-45 minutes)
Ask: How do we feel when we made mistakes or didn't do something in the past? Elicit the word "regret". Focus Ss' attention on the quote: In the end, we only regret the chances we didn't take. Ask Ss what this quote means and if they agree with it. Ss discuss in small groups. Elicit some ideas from Ss. Direct Ss' attention to the questions on w/b. PW: Ss discuss the questions. Set the time limit (3-4 min). • Is it possible to live a life without regrets? • Are regrets positive? Why or why not? • What do people regret in life? W/c FB: Ask Are regrets important in a person's life?
Show vocabulary matching activity. Tell Ss to match words and phrases with the correct definitions. Distribute handouts. Ss work individually and then peer-check their answers. Call one of the early finishers to come to the w/b and write the answers. W/c FB. Drill for pronunciation. (ANSWERS: )
Tell Ss they are going to listen to 5 people talking about things they regret. Direct Ss to pictures on slide and ask Ss to predict speakers' regrets. Ss discuss their predictions in groups. Elicit some predictions from Ss about the listening.
Focus on the task and give Ss time to read through regrets A-F, making sure Ss understand them. Then play the audio, pausing after each speaker to give Ss time to choose their answers. Get Ss to compare with a partner before checking answers. Ss check answers against the answer keys on the w/b. W/c FB: Were your predictions correct? Focus on the task and give Ss time to read 1-5. Play the audio again, pausing after each speaker to give Ss time to do the task. Play each part again if necessary. Then Ss peer-check their answers. Direct Ss to look under their chairs/tables and find the answer keys. Ss check answers against the answer keys. W/c FB.
Focus on the list of regrets and make sure Ss understand them all. Give Ss time to read the list of regrets. Put Ss in groups and get them to decide which they think are the top 5 regrets for people in their age groups. Which do you think would be the top 5 regrets for people in your age group? Ss discuss in groups and hang their results on the w/b. Then get Ss to read other groups lists. W/c FB: Ask Ss to comment on their top 5 lists choices.
