Main Aims
-
To provide gist, scan, detailed, deduction and inference reading practice using a text about Smoking in the context of Health, Quitting, Willpower
Subsidiary Aims
-
To provide review in context in the use vocabulary from the article on smoking. Using CCQ's to help students understand new or complex words
Procedure (38-54 minutes)
The teacher will walk in to the class with a cigarette (unlit!!!) in their mouth....and ask one of the students for a lighter. This should get a response from the class as it's not allowed in the class to smoke....This will introduce the topic of the day. The Teacher will elicit from the students what they think of smoking. Do they smoke? What are the legal and social rules with regards to smoking in Turkey? Where can and can't you smoke? Do they know what other cultures around the world have as smoking laws. Have they tried to quit? This will be the last question as it is the topic of the article the students are about to read. Have they tried to quit?
The teacher will show the class HO1 and explain the task. Using CCQ's to make sure the students understand what is required. The teacher will split the class into groups of 3 and give out the questions. The students will be given 3-5 minutes to come up with their suggestions. Once complete the teacher will get each one of the students to give one response to the class. There are 3 questions with only 3 required suggestions so this will work evenly. The teacher will get feedback from the students and elicit responses to the other groups answers
The teacher will explain that an article about smoking and wanting to quit will be handed out The teacher will show the class the article and explain using CCQ's what needs to be done. There are a series of questions relating to the article which the students will be asked to answer. The teacher should give the students plenty of time to read the article and while they are reading the teacher can write the questions on the WB leaving room for written answers below. Once the questions have been answered the teacher will elicit a response to whether they think the writer is likely to give up smoking. Why/Why not?
The teacher will show the class HO3 which has a series of text taken from the article. The Teacher will explain using CCQ's that the students must replace the underlined and substituted parts of the questions with the correct word from the article. The students may need to change the grammar so that the sentence makes sense. The teacher will then put the students into pairs so answers can be compared. The teacher will then put the pairs into groups of four to compare answers The teacher will elicit the answers and write them on the WB. The Teacher will discuss the answers with the WC
The Teacher will elicit responses from the students about any words and/or phrases within the article they did not understand, and write these on the WB The teacher will first ask if any of the students can give the answer and if not by using CCQ's and ICQ's gain the correct meaning. The teacher will add any words that the students didn't ask to elicit a response. If say the students don't ask about the word "Mystical" then the teacher will go over these words with the class. The teacher will ask if the class has any other "bad habits" that they wish they could change and what they might do to achieve this.
