Procedure (38-10 minutes)
Begin with the pictures from SB. Ask students: T: Where are these people? Elicit answers for each picture. Then, ask: T: What are they doing? Elicit answers.
Show task b on the slide. Take their attention to the sentences. Pre-teach 'rent'. Ask following CCqs. T: Do I live in a flat? Yes Is this flat mine? No Do I pay money for the flat every mont? Yes Then, tell the Ss to look at the photos and match them with sentences very quickly. Play the audio. Tell them to check their answers first themselves, then with their partner.
Write the marker sentence on board. Use different colours for past continuous and simple past. Ask Ss T: Which one is Simple Past? Elicit answers. Which one is Past Continuous? Elicit answers again.
Draw a cline right under the marker sentence. Ask the Ss to place the verbs in the marker sentence onto the cline. Nominate one student for each tense. Hand out task 2a. Tell the Ss to answer the questions.Use ICQs to check understanding. Then, Elicit answers. Reinforce the answers using the cline. Now focus on form. Hand out task 2b. Instruct the students to fill in the gaps with the prompts given. Use ICQs to check understanding. Elicit answers. Finally, focus on pronunciation. Play the audio. Drill the sentences from the audio. Take students' attention the stress.
For controlled practice, introduce the task 4a. Clarify that for the first activity they should circle the correct choice. Model the first one. Use ICQs. Play the audio. Students check their answers first individually then with their partners.
For semi-controlled practice, use 4b. This time tell the Ss to write correct form of the verb in the brackets. Model the first one. Use ICQs. Play the audio. Students check their answers first individually then with their partners.
Before giving the hand-out, Tell Ss that they're going to do a find someone who acivity. Model the activity. Give instructions. Check understanding. Set the limit for 5 mins. Tell the Ss to take their seats. Elicit some of their notes. Ask for surprising ones. Finally, do a wrap-up. Ask what they remember from the lesson.
