  • To provide listening practice using a text about a night in a haunted hotel in the context of ghost stories

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Turn off the light and show the students a scary video of a haunted room. Ask the students to watch the video and discuss the next two questions in pairs: 1- Would you like to spend a night in this room? why/why not? 2- Do you believe in ghosts? Monitor the Ss during their discussion. Get feedback from the students by asking the students who believe in ghosts to raise their hands and listen to some opinions.

Pre-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible by teaching problematic words

Use the slides in which the ghost orders the students to follow her instructions to teach some of the prepositions that might be new or confusing for the Ss: behind, in front of, opposite Use pictures to elicit the words: nervous, cemetery, spooky. Follow the ECDW sequence for each word. CCQs for nervous: - Is he angry? (no) - Is he worried-mime-? (yes) CCQs for spooky: - Is it strange and weird? (yes) - Is it scary? (yes) Go through the title of the reading text and elicit the word haunted using the context of the title. If the Ss cannot guess the meaning f the word ask them CCQs "Do live in haunted house? (no) Do ghosts live in a haunted house? (yes)"

While-Reading #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

Ask the students to read the text really quickly (1 min) and answer the two questions: 1- Who's going to spend a night in a haunted hotel? (Stephen Bleach) 2- What's his job? (a journalist) Tell the students to check their answers in pairs Give feedback by showing the answers on the PowerPoint slide. Tell the students to read the text again quickly in minutes and answer the 7 questions above the text. Ask ICQs: Are you going to write long answers or short answers? (short) Are you going to read every word with the pen like this (mime)? (no) Monitor the students during the task and micro teach the weak students. Ask the students to check their answers in pairs. Give feedback by showing them the answer key slide on the screen.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading and listening tasks

Ask the students to read and listen to the second part of the article in order to label the three pictures. 1- Cemetery 2- remote control 3- old television. Ask the Ss to check their answers in pairs. Give feedback by showing them the answers on the screen. Give the students the reading for detail task in which there are 7 true or false sentences and ask them to read the text again but this time with more focus and do the task. Demonstrate the first two sentences with them. Give them 7 minutes to do the task. Ask them to check their answers in pairs. Give them an answer key as feedback and give them a minute to correct their answers.

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide the students with an opportunity to respond to the text in a more personal way through a speaking activity

Show the students a question about a famous ghost story in Egypt- "Al-Nadaha" or "the caller"- to which they can relate "Do you remember the name of the story in which there was a woman who calls people and if they answer or look for her she eats them?" Encourage the students to remember similar ghost stories or to come up with their own story and give them 3-5 minutes to prepare. Divide the students into groups of threes Play the video and the sound of a camp fire and turn off the light then tell the students to start telling their stories. If there is time, give content feedback After the time is up, thank the students and finish the lesson.
