Description

In this lesson students learn speaking in the context of social customs and traditions in different countries, the lesson is based on some people talking about their country's customs and tradition.

Main Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a role-play in the context of social custom.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of giving advice to foreigners who will travel to another country in the context of social custom

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

show the students a picture of a foreigner who is visiting an Egyptian family. show them the question "what other social customs that you know about other countries? students talk in pairs and answer the question. get feedback by asking the students about different social customs.

pre-teaching vocabulary • to provide students with an understanding of some words that might be problematic in the exposure task

give the students a matching activity that contains the words. Ask the students to match the words with the definitions monitor the students to check their answers in pairs feedback with the model answer.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

give the ss handouts that has a listening ex. ask match the notes with the names of the speaker. SS Listen to a record give the ss time between each record to make notes. ask ss to check their answers in pairs. give ss the model answer.

Useful Language (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

elicit the words we use to talk about general situations. clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation. ask the SS to fill in a mind map with tips to help a foreigner who will visit Egypt soon. as a kind of interesting way to elicit the target language and go through problematic parts of the target language and also make sure they use it correctly. pair work monitoring the ss elicit the language used to give an advice ( should , can, can't, must, have to). from their answers clarify the form.(should+v1, etc) Drill the the target language ( can, have to , must bring.)

Speaking Task(s) (15-17 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Ask the SS to do a role-play in pairs about a foreigner who is visiting their country and they will act as foreigners as well. giving ss a handout to help generating the role-play. monitor ss.

Feedback and Error Correction (1-3 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

find any mistakes made by the students. give them a feedback ( positive and negative as well).
