Activities in Social Lİfe

Description

In this lesson the students will learn about the social activities that people from different cultures and backgrounds do. The students will start by coming up the board and write what they do on a night out. Then, picking the activities in ex 1, they will discuss the questions in ex.2 with their partners. Later the teachers eliticits some unknown words and get the students match them with their definitions. Having done that, the students skim the text and answer the questions in ex.3. After that, they will scan the text and answer the questions in ex.4b. Later on they will play Kahoot game and guess the meanings of the expressions and words in ex.5. Finally, they will have a discussion in groups about the nightlives of the people mentioned in the text.

Main Aims

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist and scan reading practice using a text about night out activities in the context of social life
  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a discussion in the context of social life

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The teacher writes the question on the board; "What do you do on a night-out with your friends?" The students come up to the board and write their activities. Then, the students will look at the activities in exercise 1, pick the ones they do and discuss the questions in ex.2 by using the activities they've picked.

Eliciting Unknown Vocabulary/Pre-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

The teacher introduces some unknown vocabulary and have the students match the words with their definitions. Then, the students will look at the pictures and read the captions of the text and answer the questions in ex:3. Later, they will share their answers with their partners.

While-Reading (5-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

The teacher gives the handout to the students. There are five statements that the people say in the text. The students will read the text and write the first letter of their names next to the statements they say. Later, they check in pairs.

While-Reading / Vocabulary Revision (14-20 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

The students will read the text again and answer the questions in exercise 4b. They check in pairs. Then, they read the text again and try to guess the meaning of the words and phrases with their partners. The teacher projects the answers and students do a final check. The teacher projects the Kahoot game. Using their mobiles, the students will try to remember the meaning of the unknown vocabulary and the phrases they've learnt in the lesson.

Post-Reading/Speaking (3-5 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

The students choose one of the questions in ex. 6 and discuss their ideas in groups of three.
