In this lesson the Ss learn making generalizations in the context of social customs in Thailand.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of language used for making generalisations in the context of social customs in Thailand

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide specific information listening practice using a text about tips for visitors to Thailand in the context of social customs in Thailand

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will ask the Ss if they've ever been in Thailand and ask Ss some questions about Thailand.

Exposure (8-12 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

I will introduce the topic I will clarify some words from the text on the w/b. Then the Ss have to read the text carefully and have to guess the answers on their own. When they're finished I will ask them to compare their answers with their partners. Here I will ask for feedback.And then I will prepare the Ss for the listening and will give information about the people in the listening. While listening Ss compare their guesses with the listening. At the end of this stage I will ask the Ss to discuss with their partners about the similarities and differences between Thai and their own culture.

Highlighting (2-2 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

I will highlight the TL in the text and will explain that it is used for generalizations.

Clarification (5-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I will clarify the structures "it is+adjective+..." and "tend to" for generalizations on the w/b and will ask the Ss to find these forms in the text with their partners. After that they have to find other adjectives for generalizations.

Controlled Practice (5-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Ss will do Exercise 2 in groupwork. After checking exercise 2 I will give Ss flashcards with sentence parts from exercise 1. The Ss have to put the words into correct order on the w/b. Here I check with class the two different sentence structures.

Semi-Controlled Practice (6-8 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

The Ss will have to do rest of exercise 1 with their partners. After finished they discuss with the class if they agree or not.

Free Practice (4-5 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Ss have to write their own sentences about generalized situations and share that with the class.
