Materials
Main Aims
-
To provide clarification, review and practice of Modals of obligation and permission in the context of working from home and business life
Subsidiary Aims
-
To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of to-do lists, daily priorities, and some advice on how to get your boss to like you
Procedure (41-55 minutes)
T asks Ss about the advantages and disadvantages of working from home. Ss discuss in pairs or groups (according to the number of Ss in the class) a few minutes.
Ss listen to an audio about the advantages and disadvantages of working from home. Already having listened to the audio, Ss underline the appropriate verb structure in the tapescript. They check their answers in pairs.
T asks Ss what necessity and permission is and elicits some answers. The Ss completes a table of necessity and permission and work out the meaning for themselves for modals including have to, must, don't have to, can, can't and must'nt. They check their answers in pairs. Ss fill in the blanks using have to, must, don't have to, can, can't and must'nt. They check answers in pairs.
Should is added to the modal verbs in this stage. Ss work out the differency of meaning between must and should themselves using the first exercise in HO3. They check answers in pairs. Then they make a to do list for themselves and tell their priorities to their friends using their list.
Ss do a controlled practice activity using all the modals including should in this stage. They read a text about "five ways to get your boss to like you" and underline the correct modals. They check their answers in pairs.
Ss compare their ideas about the best piece of advice on how to get your boss to like you in pairs or groups.
Ss are divided into small groups. Each group takes a card and write 4 rules for the place on the card. They can't use the forbidden words. T writes the modals on the board: You have to/must, You mustn't, You can, You cannot, You don't have to. T reminds not to write the name of the place because the class will guess it. T makes an example: FOR BANK: DON’T USE MONEY, CHEQUE, INVEST, QUEUE, PAY. You can borrow cash from this place. You usually have to show ID. You cant buy things in this place.
