Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about top airports in the world in the context of plans and dreams.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide review of airport related vocabulary in the context of plans and dreams.
  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a role-play in the context of plans and dreams.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-6 minutes) • To get students interested in the topic

Show pictures of Sabiha Gökçen Airport and Atatürk Airport and ask: What is your nearest airport? What can you do while you are waiting for a flight? Students discuss their answers with their friends. W/C feedback. Elicit the words "facilities" and "delayed"

Pre-Reading (7-9 minutes) • To get students thinking about the reading

Show vocabulary matching activity on PPT. Tell students to match the vocabulary with the correct definition. Distribute handouts. Students will do the activity alone then check their answers with the other students in their group. (5 minutes) To check the meaning, show pictures of the vocabulary (on ppt). Script: Look at the pictures. Match the vocabulary (point the vocabulary handout) with the correct pictures. Talk to your partner and decide together. (3 minutes) W/C FB Drill for pronunciation. /fəˈsɪləti/ -Facility /kjuː/ - Queue /dɪˈleɪ/ - delay /ˈɔːkɪd / orchid

Pre-Reading 2 (5-6 minutes) • To get students thinking about the reading

Show the title "Top Airports in the world" Script: Do you know which Airports are the top ones in the world? Show the pictures of Top Airports. Get students to discuss where these airports are and why they are so good. (3 minutes) Monitor and elicit some answers and facilities and write some of the students' predictions on the board. (2 minutes)

While-Reading 1 (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with a less challenging reading task

Ask students to read the text quickly and tick the two sentences that are true about the text. ICQs: Are we reading the text very carefully? (No) Are all the sentences true? (No) How many true sentences are there? (two) Distribute the reading task handout. Students do the activity individually first, then checks with a partner. Show the answer key. The correct answers are: At Munich Airport passengers can drink free coffee and tea. You can rent day rooms at Zurich Airport until your boarding time.

While Reading 2 (8-9 minutes) • To provide a more challenging task for students to read in more detail

Students will read the article again and match the correct facilities with the correct airport. Get students to compare their answers with a partner first. Then check the answers as a class. The correct answers are: 1. Osaka 4. Osaka 7. Singapore 2. Munich 5. Hong Kong 3. Seoul 6. Zurich If time allows: Students will recycle the new vocabulary through a taboo game.

Post Reading (4-6 minutes) • To allow students respond to the text, give their opinions and do some productive speaking work.

Show the role-play task. Students will imagine that they are at the airport and their flight is delayed. Students will do role-plays about the things they are going to do at the airport. Model a sentence. " I am going to read magazines" Elicit one or two more sentences from the students, highlight the future "be going to" form. Write these sentences on the board too. Put students in different pairs. Monitor and help, encourage the students to use "be going to"
