Main Aims

  • To provide detailed and scan reading practice using a text about "How many friends should you have? (Social media and real life)" in the context of friendships

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a discussion about the comments they agree and disagree with in the context of three comments about online friendships

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T projects the lead-in photo of the reading text on the board and asks "How many friends should you have on social media and in real life? Write down numbers." Ss discuss in pairs.

Pre-Reading (3-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

T tells the Ss to discuss the statements in HO1 with their partner. T elicits some feedback but does not give the correct answers. If Ss think an answer is false, they are supposed to give the correct answer.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Ss read and check their answers in 3 minutes. They check their answers in pairs before doing a class check. If the answer is false, Ss provide the correct answer. T asks how many of their predictions were right.

While-Reading#2 (13-15 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Ss answer the questions in HO3 in about 4 minutes and then check their answers in pairs. During W/C feedback T gives some updated numbers about Facebook users and asks Ss "Which answers are you surprised by? Why? Do you agree with the article? Why/Why not?" Ss, do a definitions matching task about some language in the text. T gives FB using an answer key. They check their answers in pairs.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Ss read the different comments and decide which opinions they agree or disagree with. Then they stand up and go to three different corners of the room according to the comments they agree. They talk about why they agree, and justify their answers. Then, some Ss change groups and tell the others about their statement. After a third round of swapping groups, they go back to their initial places. Then once more, they talk about in groups "How many friends is the right number to have? What do you think. Have you changed your opinion?"
