Materials
Main Aims
-
To provide clarification of verbs make, let and allow in the context of obligation and permission.
Subsidiary Aims
-
To provide process writing practice of new verbs with in sentences.
Procedure (50 minutes)
I'll start conversation about homes, apartments, summer homes and gated communities. I'll ask about rules in the communities and what everyone thinks about them (Is it good to have them? Does everyone should follow them?).
First I'll ask Ss to imagine to have a summer house/apartment and ask them, in pairs or groups, to write an advertising "summer house/apartment for rent", considering what renter can or can't do in the house. Once finished, Ss can put the adds on the wall for everyone to see it.
First I'll try eliciting words obligation and permission, and then define their meaning, by making examples on the w/b making 2 groups out of them. Than I'll try to elicit verbs 'make', 'let' and 'allow', separate them into those groups and have Ss focus on them. At the same time I'll make sure that Ss understand the meanings of those verbs very well, by writing examples on w/b.
I'll give students exr 1 pg 29 and have them in pair to do it. Once finished I'll get FB from them. Follow with question "What is being described in exercise 1?" and have small discussion about it.
I'll show the structure of the sentence and how 'make, let and allow' fit in to the sentence, by drawing a table. I'll support it with a lot of examples, so Ss understand the form.
In the groups Ss rewrite their advertisements, by using the model sentences from the board. Once finished, Ss will put their new sentences on the wall next to the once they put previously. Everyone will go around and read each other adds and compare the old once to the new once.
If any time left, in pairs Ss will do an exercise 6 pg 15 (Straightforward Intermediate Workbook), to practice more 'make, let and allow' in the sentences.
