Materials
Main Aims
-
To provide students practice in reading for gist and details in the context of the science of happiness
Subsidiary Aims
-
To teach some vocabulary in science and metaphors for happy and practise them in speaking
Procedure (54-69 minutes)
Stick a big smiley face on the board. Elicit some ideas about what makes me happy. Then I stick five sentences which make me happy in fact.
Students write down five things that make them happy. Then they work in pairs and discuss the questions on the board.
I teach some vocabulary before reading and prepare students for the text. Students are given a worksheet. They do a matching exercise individually to test their knowledge. Students match the words with their definitions. To check the answers, they work in pairs. Then, study MFP.
Students will be reading the text for a gist task. Individually, they'll read the text in 1 or 2 minutes, and put the headings in the correct place. Then students will check each other's answers. Feedback as a WC. If needed, practise pronunciation for the headings.
Students read the text again. Then they'll complete the questions in the course book in pairs by discussing the reasons. Students write the answers on the board to check them.
Students see six sentences on a worksheet. In pairs, they discuss the meaning of them. They put a smiley face if the sentence has a happy meaning and put a sad face if it has a sad meaning. Then the teacher asks for the words which give the sentences positive or negative menings. The teacher elicits the answers and write them on the WB.
Students work in pairs for a speaking activity. The teacher asks if they agree with the text or not. Then, students will be talking about the things they feel happy and sad by using the metaphors they have just learned. Show a demo for the activity eg. When I passed the exam, I was on the top of the world.
