Description

In this lesson, the students will be discussing their experiences of memory and then reading about the experiences of others. The reading activity will focus on reading for gist.

Main Aims

  • To encourage students to develop their ability to read for the gist.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide students with an opportunity to develop their fluency and confidence in speaking.

Procedure

Introduction (5 minutes) • To set the context for the lesson.

-Teacher says “ I have a bad memory” -Ask the class to discuss in pairs what do I mean by this? What is memory? -Feedback and discuss any misconceptions or misunderstandings before starting the main tasks. Write down keywords on the board.

Task 1 (10 minutes) • To encourage students to speak about memory.

-Start by handing out activity 1. -Read through 1 A and check for understanding of Key vocab. Check students understand the task. -Start student discussion. Tell them they have 5 mins. Move around the room and monitor. -Give 3 mins to feedback answers. -1B Do you have a good memory- get the students to ask each other this question and answer. Give them 2 min.

Task 2 (10 minutes) • To get students to discuss what they have read and show understanding.

-Hand out task 2. -Explain that they will be looking for experiences that they think are similar to their own. -Give students 3-4 mins to read the quotes. -Get students to discuss with their partner which experiences they found similar. Move around the room and monitor. (5 mins) -Quick feedback to class (1 min)

Task 3 (20 minutes) • To get students to read for gist and then discuss their understanding

-Hand out text and Task 3. Talk through Task 3 and explain we are reading for the gist. -Ask pupils to underline any tricky vocabulary and read around it if possible (monitor this)-Give students 10 minutes to read the text ( remind them we are reading to get the gist). -Now get students to discuss and write down which paragraph goes with each quote. 8-9 mins. -Feedback answers and discuss any misconceptions. (1 min) Answers= a-5 b-4 c-1 d-3 Extension- Do you think that computer memory is better than human memory? Why?

Plenary- Remaining time (5 minutes) • To get students to draw together the topic covered in the lesson.

Discuss students thoughts about the text. Start off with GW and then feedback to the class. Discuss any vocabulary that students found tricky in the text.
