Main Aims

To provide an opportunity to develop reading for gist and specific detail. The learners will also be asked to discuss the content of the reading and see some of the target lexis in context.
Subsidiary Aims

To provide clarification of adjectives describing people in the context of text about surviving in extreme conditions
Procedure (45-55 minutes)
Show 4 photos of extreme conditions: desert, mountain, jungle, river rafting. Ask learners to write words for each picture. Sts match a description to a photo and then write their own description for the other pictures.
Sts listen to the tape and number the situations in teh order they hear them. (2a) Sts match the phrases with the situations. Drill the phrases and mark stress. Practice: Milling activity - sts stand up and ask questions to practice the target lexis.
On w/b: extreme sports. Elicit examples from sts. Sts discuss in pairs. Sts look at photos and predict the goal. Sts read quickly to check their response.
Sts do the T/F activity and check in pairs. 1;F, 2:F, 3:T, 4:F, 5;F, 6:T, 7:T, 8:T Answer key (under chairs).
Discussion. Mingle: sts ask questions to each other. Feedback to a new partner.
