Procedure (67-90 minutes)
In order for the teacher to grab the attention of the students, the teacher shows the students some pictures of a satellite taking pictures from high above the earth / street views of Antarctica showing penguins/ the Solar System and tries to elicit information about them from the students and anything they might know about them. The teacher might put the students in groups to discuss and try to figure out as much as they can about the pictures.
The teacher tells the students that they are going to read a text about Earth/ the Solar System, but before they start reading it, there are some vocabulary that they need to know to be able to understand the text. The teacher divides the students into two groups and tells them that he/she is going to tell them the meanings of some vocabulary in the text and they should pinpoint the word. The fastest group gets a point. The teacher starts like this: ''a word in line 3 paragraph 1 means....''. When a students finds the word, the teacher writes it down on board, models and drills it, then asks the students about the part of speech of the word.
The teacher shows the students which text they are going to read, then highlights the first task (skimming for gist). After that, the teacher tells the students to read the text silently and individually and gives them a time limit (2 minutes). After the students finish reading, the teacher puts them in pairs to check the answers with each other. Finally, the teacher gives a whole class feedback.
The teacher tells the students that they are going to read the text one more time, a little more closely this time(the teacher gives them a sufficient time) to try to find the answers of the following exercise (which is more challenging and includes scanning for details/inference). After the students finish reading, the teacher puts them in pairs to discuss their answers. The teacher monitors the students while they are trying to find the answers and offers help if necessary and also takes some notes for the whole class feedback.
The teacher puts the students in groups and asks them to discuss these questions with each other: What places do you want to explore? Why? Do you think it is easy to go there? Why? Why not? Who do you want to go with? The teacher monitors the students closely while performing the activity and offers help if necessary. After the students finish their discussion, the teacher gives feedback on both the content and the performance of the students.
