Main Aims

  • To provide Ss with clarification / review and practice of functional language for telling the time

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide Ss practice in listening for specific information and speaking for accuracy

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T uses the photos of clocks. S asks students what are them? She tries to elicit the words clock or watch. Then she asks them if they have any of them in the class. She expects some students to have watches. Then she asks students the time. Students would probably struggle to tell. The teacher tells them that they will learn telling time today.

Exposure (6-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Teacher shows students a picture of an analog clock with numbers but no needles. draws needles that show one o'clock and ask students what time the clock shows. After eliciting the answer, she writes " it is one o'clock" on the board. Then, she does the same thing for each number and drills the sentences. She shows pictures to elicit vocabulary items which are quarter, half, past ... Then she shows pictures of analog clocks again to elicit time which are: 1. It's quarter to twelve / It's twelve fifteen 2. It's half past twelve / It's twelve thirty

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Ss work on ex2a in pairs/small groups. The teacher gets the answers then proceed to ex2b.

Semi-Controlled Practice (5-7 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Teacher gives students pictures of 6 digital clocks showing different times. Then she gives students 6 pictures of analog clocks and asks students to draw the time they see on digital clocks to these analog clocks. Then they write the times under the clocks. Students check their answers in pairs. The teacher lets students give the answers and give feedback.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

After students fill the blanks in 5a, The teacher writes these three questions, 1. What time is it? 2. What's the time, please? 3. Excuse me. Have you got the time, please? Then she put students into groups of 3 people and give each group an analog clock. The person who holds the clock changes the time and ask one of these three questions and the others answer the question by telling the time. The teacher monitors and listens closely to see if students have any erroneous utterances.
