In this lesson, ss will deal with activities based on a text about escape from a prisoner-of-war camp.

Main Aims

  • To provide scan and detailed reading practice using a text about escape from a prisoner-of-war camp

  • To provide clarification and practice in the context of escape from a prisoner-of-war camp

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Revise items of clothing. Give ss handouts so that they match the appropriate items with correct words. Peercheck, Group-Check Ask ss which items are men's & women's clothing.

Pre-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Give handouts the ss. Ask them to match the appropriate pictures with convenient sentences to elicit the vocabulary written in italics and bold. Peercheck. Group-check, drilling. Ask ss to predict what the text might be about, let them discuss among each other.

While-Reading #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist/specific information reading tasks

Ask ss to reorder the paragraphs. Peercheck, group-check. Ask ss to read the text again and make a list of everything Heinz wore when he was disguised as a)Mr. Budd, and b)the woman. (Mr. Budd: leggings, cap, mackintosh, bag, spectacles; woman: hat, muff, veil, jacket, skirt, belt) Ss come up to the board and marked them on PP. Ask ss to answer true or false statement. Peercheck/Group-check

While-Reading #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

Ask ss to read the text one more time in a more detailed way and discuss the questions in pairs without looking at the text. When they finish discussing ask them to check their answers with the other group.

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Would they try to escape like Henz did? If yes why? If no why? What kind of escape plan would they create if they were a prisoner? Who has got the best escape plan?
