Description

in this reading lesson, the context is "Tsunami as a natural disaster". The teacher familiarizes the students with two main stages of reading (scanning, skimming and reading for details)

Main Aims

  • • To develop speed reading skills with a reading race

  • To review vocabulary related to natural disasters
  • To Practice writing skills

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

will put some photos for homeless kids and for the seashore after tsunami's attack (https://www.google.com.eg/search?q=natural+disasters&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwikv8-Rye_cAhWCzKQKHbFkCGoQ_AUICigB&biw=1280&bih=614) . Then ask students to guess the topic and to try describing the scenes to elicit the vocabulary they will need for the activities

Highlighting (10 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

During the the eliciting process the teacher will write down on the board ( then new vocab that the will need for the activity ) and make sure to repeat it while writing it down on the board as a kind of drilling to make sure that student will memorize the new vocab

Controlled Practice (13 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

then students will work in pairs, each pair will take a copy of the article (http://articles.latimes.com/1998/jul/19/news/mn-5271) and requested to answer 3 questions. What is name of the new paper that published the article? What is the natural disaster that is mentioned in the article? Where did the disaster occurred? (now they are practicing scanning as its all mentioned in the article Title )

Semi-Controlled Practice (13 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

(Skimming activity) In this activity students are requested to work in pairs to find the answers for the below questions and to highlight it on the article - how did that disaster effected peoples'' lives? -how many times did it occur over the last century? -what did queen Elizabeth say in her message ? - How Foreign Affairs Minister Alexander Downer Help during the disaster? - How did the Tunisian happen? -what is the country that promised to provide transport for relief supplies and a mobile hospital to Papua New Guinea

Free Practice (14 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Now the teacher will ask the students to write a story of a family that has been affected by such a disaster in 10 sentences. Then They will read it Loudly to the whole class by turn.
