Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of present simple and present progressive tense forms in the context of work

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of work

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (8-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will first check the homework as usual, then ask them to speak about the special day in their lives for about 1 min each. Then we will review the adjectives that we learned last lesson. After this I will ask them questions showing the picture on the handout.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Students will work in pairs discussing what are the most important things for people who work. They will compare their ideas with other students. Following this, they will complete a vocabulary task matching words and definitions.

Highlighting (6-8 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Students will listen to the tracks and complete the exercises. I will highlight some sentences from the listening.

Clarification (5-7 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I will write the sentences on the board and ask them questions such as "which sentence talks about a daily habit?", "which sentence refers to the exact moment?". Then I will elicit the structures for both tense forms.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students will practice what they've learned doing tasks.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

They will write for a company indicating their position and what they're doing right now. For this, they will read a sample. They will evaluate each other's letters and decide which one is the best.
