Description

Ss practice 'there is/are' mainly by mechanical exercises and then they listen to a dialogue as listening is a sub aim for this lesson.

Materials

Main Aims

  • Ss will be better able to provide clarification, review and practice of there is / are in the context of places in a city through controlled and freer practice activities

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide specific information listening practice using a text about Keswick (a city) in the context of places in a city

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To continue the lesson context

Ss are asked questions about their cities

Exposure (3-4 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Some sentences of ss are written on the w/b

Highlighting (2-3 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Ss look at the w/b and see the new grammar structures.

Clarification (5-6 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Ss talk about the new structures and answer some CCQs. Grammar rules are shown. Examples are given. HO1 is given.

Controlled Practice (2-3 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Ss are given Ex.8 on s/b p.39. They fill the gaps. Check them with their partners.

Listening (3-4 minutes) • To give answer orally and continue with pronunciation

Ss are given the answers with a listening (R.5.3). They check again with their partners. FB is given as a w/c. Drilling starts.

Semi-Controlled Practice (3-4 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Ss are given task 9 on p.39. They start as a PW. They check with their partners.

Listening 2 (3-4 minutes) • To give answer orally and continue with pronunciation

Ss are given the answers with a listening (R.5.4). They check again with their partners. FB is given as a w/c. Drilling starts.

Semi-Controlled Practice (7-8 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Ss are given task 2 on workbook. They are given some time and ss work as pairs. Then they check with other groups. FB is given as a w/c. They are given task 3 on workbook. Again they are given some time and ss work as pairs. Then they check with other groups. FB is given as a w/c.

Free Practice (4-5 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Ss are given a picture (HO1, p.3). As groups, they are expected use new structures in their sentences.
