Description

Ss will clarify lexis for traveling, first by going over different forms of travel, followed by a specific air travel exercise: from planning a holiday to arriving at the chosen destination.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (8-9 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

(ex1) WC: Ask: What do you know about HK? Ask Ss to show it on the map (chest each map and then stick maps on the board); "how do people go to work do you think?" (point out "island") *Have a list of previous lesson's transport vocabulary ready in case Ss can not remember (scooter, etc.) (stick pictures of transport on the board) *Put up pictures of HK and ask: "what different forms of transport can you see?" "do you think it is easy to travel about in HK?" *Ask about personal experiences "how do you go to school/bodrum/NYC" *Make agree/disagree statements ie "I go to NYC by scooter"; "I go to Besiktas by plane" (ex2a) Ss in pairs; put 3 discussion topics at 3 different stations in the classroom. INSTRUCTION: Stand up and walk to each station with your partner. Discuss (talk about) your answers to each question. When finished with one station, move to the next one. "How often do you travel by plane?" "Do you like/dislike traveling by plane?" "Do you like/dislike spending time at airports?" ICQ: "Are we writing or talking about our answers?"

Exposure: reading for detail (7-8 minutes) • Ss to read and understand written stages of travel and put the stages in logical order.

S Give Ss the HO for exercise 2b INSTRUCTION: Read sentences a-j and put them in the correct order. Go over statement b and establish it is the first step. Check in pairs. Monitor. Check for WC if more than 3 Ss. (or swap partner) FB- listen to recording for ex.2c. for the correct order. (Unit 5 Recording 3)

Language clarification (9-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for air travel

GW/PW. Stick pictures on board (or give as HO if small no of Ss). Give the phrase cards to Ss. INSTRUCTION: Put the phrase cards in the same order to match the pictures. Monitor. FB- peer check Exercise 4 on pg 26 of workbook Individual work INSTRUCTION: Match phrases with their meaning. Give HO. Monitor. FB- check in pairs Possible difficulty areas and CCQs: Book your ticket on line: CCQ: "do you buy your ticket at the travel agent's or on the internet?" Boarding pass: ticket with your seat number; you get it when you check-in. CCQ:"when you check-in, do they give you a boarding pass or a passport?" Board the plane: get onto the plane before your flight. CCQ:"when you board the plane, do you get on the plane or off the plane?" Departure lounge (departures): place in the airport where you wait for your flight. CCQ:"where do you wait before you board the plane: check-in area or departures?" CCQ: When your flight is delayed, is the plane coming early or late? Go through security: show picture Go through immigration control: show picture Gate number: picture Drill if Ss struggle with any words/phrases (immigration)

Controlled practice (5-6 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

HO: Exercise 5a from the workbook, S to work individually. INSTRUCTION: "Fill in the blanks with the words in the box" ICQ:"Can you use any word that is not in the box?" No. Check in Pairs. Monitor. FB: get each group/student to read any sentences that they found difficult.

Freer Practice (10-12 minutes) • To get Ss using the TL more fluently.

Pair Ss HO questions ex3 pg 44. Stick the questions at 3 different stations. INSTRUCTION: Discuss each question with your partner. Q1: How can you buy tickets for bus, train or plane travel? How often do you do this? Q2: What do you like/dislike about traveling on buses, trains, and ferries? Q3: Can you travel to foreign destinations by bus or train from where you live? Which do you prefer? Why? Monitor. FB- catch any misused/difficult phrases and drill.
