Description

In this lesson, the students will learn functional language about communicating about public transportation and will create their own dialogues to practice.

Main Aims

  • The students will practice functional language about transportation by listening to dialogues and making their own.

Subsidiary Aims

  • to practice listening for gist and detail, speaking

Procedure

Lead-in (5 minutes) • to get into the topic

-show the students 3 pictures on slide 1 Q: Can you guess today's topic from these pictures? Q: What is the craziest thing that happened to you during rush hour? (Personal example) PAIR WORK WGFB

Listening for gist (5 minutes) • matching dialogues to pictures

STILL SLIDE 1 Listen to the audio once. Match 3 dialogues with the 3 pictures. PAIR WORK PAIR CHECK WGFB

Listening for detail (5 minutes) • understanding if sentences from the dialogues are T/F.

SLIDE 2 Remind the students: D1-B (woman on the bus) D2-C (the man calling the taxi) D3 (the woman who missed the train). "Listen to decide if these sentences are true or false."

True/False activity (5 minutes) • correcting the false sentences

With a partner, students correct the false sentences. EXAMPLE: Dialogue 1, 2 PEER CHECK

Matching cut-ups (3 minutes) • matching pieces of dialogues together

SWAP PAIRS The students are given cut-outs as well. They will match the pieces of dialogue. PAIR WORK, PEER CHECK

Making sentences (5-7 minutes) • students make individual sentences

The students will change the underlined words to make their own. INDIVIDUAL WORK, WRITING, EXAMPLE 1. (Up to nr 4. if time remains, continue.) PEER CHECK, WGFB

Pronunciation (6 minutes) • To understand stress patterns.

Does this bus (train, plane) go to the town centre (mall, school)? Have you got change for a ten-pound (ten-lira, fifteen-lira) note? Elicit different words. Choral drill, individual drill.

Dialogue (8 minutes) • students make their own dialogues

CHANGE PAIRS Students randomly select a situation and work in pairs to create their own 3-4 sentence dialogue. Present to neigboring pairs.
