Main Aims

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide specific information listening practice using a text about Our lives in the context of entertainment
  • To provide product writing practice of a letter in the context of entertainment

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ask SS what they do in their free time. Ask how many hours on a day they do these things they enjoy. Ask what they spend most of their time doing. Ask what they would like to spend more time on. Ask them to imagine that they have a chance to change their life some way. Ask them what they would change and what effect it would have. Tell them to discuss it with their partners. Ask them what they can actually do to change their situation. Tell them to think about it with their neighbour and help each other with suggestions.

Exposure (10-15 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

Tell SS they are going to do a life changing activity. Put them in pairs and draw a flower on the board. Write six aspect of life on the flower and check their understanding. Tell them they are going to interview with their partner about their lives and make notes. Ask them to write their partners' name in the middle of the flower. Demonstrate a conversation with one of your colleagues in the class.

Productive Task(s) (10-15 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Tell them to finish the interview part. Ask them to look at their charts together and talk about how they would like their lives to be different next year. Tell them to draw a second flower and ask them to write their partner's name in the middle. Tell them to make notes about possible and realistic changes they hope to make next year.

Productive Task(s) (5-10 minutes) • To improve SS writing skills

Ask SS to write a short letter to themselves to read next year so that they can see which of their decisions have become real.

Feedback and Error Correction (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Ask SS their ideas about their possible changes and write some sentences on board to correct their mistakes, which affect their fluency.
