Main Aims

To provide gist, scan and detailed reading practice using a text about nationalities

Subsidiary Aims

To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of nationalities

Procedure (36-45 minutes)

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I review the names of countries with the help of the students.

Pre-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

I teach some of the nationalities by using photos.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Students listen to the audio and read the text silently. Then they do the first exercise of their books.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (12-14 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

I clarify the meaning of the things they read in the text. Then they read it again and do a T or F exercise in pair. After that students practice loud reading in pair.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

I give students some picture. They can see some famous people and their nationality. They have to ask and answer questions about the nationalities of the people in the photos in pair.
