Procedure (62-82 minutes)
T shows Ss a couple of citations on the "Work and Life Balance" issue. T asks Ss to discuss the citations in pairs whether they agree\disagree and giving reasons for their choices and then report the results of their discussion to the class. T also makes use of questions stated in "Starting Point" SB p 12.
Read the text p 12 for gist and do ex 2 p 12 (individual-peer check- class). Follow-up question: ex 3 p 12. (giving reasons). CCQs.
T asks Ss to do ex 4 p 13 (matching) using the TL from the text - individually-peer check- class feedback with CCQs.
T asks the Ss to match a word/phrase of the TL list with an example of a situation (which it describes). Pair work- class feedback. CCQs. MFP clarification.
1) Gap-fill exercise ( take from Practice File 2 p 108 but with no prompts) 2) Blockbusters. A competition-based exercise based on working out the words with jumbled-up letters.(blockbuster handout). Pair work. 3) Tic-tac-toe with missing first words of the collocations. The phrases should not be repeated (9 in full). Pair work.
1) ex 5 p 13. Ss in pairs discuss the questions in ex 5 p 13, 1 asking another answering questions (acting as a manager). Half the exercise down, they change places. 2) "Find someone who..." Ss get a card with a few prompts describing who they have to find. They start mingling, talking to each other, asking questions, reacting using the TL and trying to find the person they need. 3) Listening ex 8 p 13- Ss listen and fill in the table with the examples supporting the idea.
Ss get a pic of the most and least stressful jobs. Ss in pairs study the info provided by the chart, choose one job and prepare the report for the class claiming and explain why they think this or that job has that level of stress and tips how the work life balance can be achieved using the TL if and when applicable. Opt., T might ask the Ss making the report not to name the position for the rest of the class to guess it.
